A new rule taking effect March 4, 2013, allows some immediate relatives of U.S. citizens to apply for a temporary waiver of inadmissability that allows them to leave the country to seek a visa so they may return to the United States as a lawful permanent resident. Previously, the U.S. government required visa applicants to wait 10 years outside the United States if they spent more than a year in the country without authorization.
