A new rule taking effect March 4, 2013, allows some immediate relatives of U.S. citizens to apply for a temporary waiver of inadmissability that allows them to leave the country to seek a visa so they may return to the United States as a lawful permanent resident. Previously, the U.S. government required visa applicants to wait 10 years outside the United States if they spent more than a year in the country without authorization. NIJC's Lisa Koop explains on WBEZ that while the initiative is still new, she is cautious but optimistic that this rule will allow families to be reunified more quickly. Read the article.
