In November 2010, the United States will undergo its first Universal Periodic Review (UPR) with the United Nations Human Right Council. This human rights mechanism, established in 2006, periodically reviews all member states regarding their compliance with their human rights obligations and commitments. The UPR offers an opportunity to pressure the U.S. government to comply with those obligations. As part of this process, the National Immigrant Justice Center has joined with 25 human rights organizations and practitioners to submit a report regarding the U.S. immigration enforcement and detention system. The report highlights human rights violations such as arbitrary detention, inhumane detention conditions, and denial of due process.
NIJC’s report gained broad support among human rights advocates, including 14 immigrant and human rights organizations and practitioners who signed on as stakeholders and 11 additional organizations who endorsed the report.
