Welcome Immigrants’ Contributions to our Communities,
Allow them to Fully Integrate into U.S. Society

The Citizenship Promotion Act of 2007, a bill introduced by Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) and Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), would make citizenship and assimilation into American society possible for a large number of lawful permanent residents.

  • Take steps to increase efficiency in background checks, a process that has unduly delayed the processing of thousands of eligible applicants for citizenship.
  • Create a federal program similar to Illinois' New Americans Initiative that would give lawful permanent residents access to legal assistance and encourage them to apply for citizenship.
  • Create a federal program to assist motivated, lawful immigrants to gain the skills necessary to integrate into American culture through English and civics courses.
