NIJC's Programs

Heartland Alliance's National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) promotes human rights and access to justice for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers through legal services, policy reform, impact litigation, and public education. NIJC blends individual client advocacy with efforts to promote broad-based systemic change. The organization’s comprehensive programs—focusing on asylum, immigrant detention, unaccompanied immigrant children, human trafficking, LGBT immigration, and victims of domestic violence—set national precedents for protecting human rights within U.S. borders while seeking fair and humane reform of the current U.S. immigration system.

 

Counter-Trafficking Project
Provides comprehensive services to victims of human trafficking, conducts training and technical assistance, and rasies public awareness.

 

Defenders Initiative
Provide trainings and respond to e-mail inquiries from public defenders and criminal defense attorneys who have questions regarding potential immigration issues for their clients.

 

Detention, Democracy & Due Process Project
Provides legal orientation and representation to immigrant adults and children who are held by the U.S. government in immigration detention and advocates for humane reform of the immigration detention and enforcement system.

 

Immigrant Children's Protection Project
Provides specialized legal services to and advocates for immgirant children, many of whom are fleeing human rights abuses such as forced recruitment as soldiers, sexual exploitation, child labor, and abuse.

 

Immigrant Legal Defense Project
Provides immigration assistance and deportation defense services to non-detained immigrants.

 

Jeanne and Joseph Sullivan Project for Protection of Asylum Seekers
Provides free legal representation to asylum seekers fleeing persecution in their homelands.

 

National Asylum Partnership on Sexual Minorities
Works to secure protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and HIV-positive individuals who are victims of persecution in their home countries because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
