On September 23, 2014 the Obama administration announced it would open a massive detention center for families, primarily women and children fleeing violence in Central America. This move comes as NIJC and other advocates--including legal service providers, mental health workers, and anti-domestic violence advocates--push for the closure of family detention facilities because of due process violations and limited access to mental health services, among other serious concerns.

In November of 2014, the Obama administration announced it would be closing the family detention facility in Artesia, New Mexico. However, plans remained in motion to open the family detention center in Dilley, Texas. NIJC commented in media on the disappointing lateral move.
