Chicago Public Radio: Was Immigration Dragnet Too Wide?

Immigration and Customs Enforcement says it has jailed almost 9,000 foreign-born gang members since 2005.

A four-day operation that ended Wednesday targeted immigrants with gang ties in suburbs and towns northwest of Chicago. ICE, as the agency is known, says 42 of the 49 detainees have criminal histories.

Des Moines Register: Detainees' guilty pleas could prompt deportation

"Detainees from the Postville raid will move through the criminal process before they begin separate court hearings on being in the country illegally, federal immigration officials said Wednesday.

That fact alarms immigration attorneys who said if the detainees plead guilty to a crime, they will be immediately deported – even if they would’ve been eligible to stay in the United States"

Inianapolis Star:Bayh backs alien smuggling measure

Federal and local officers arrested 58 people in a four-day sweep of suburbs north of Chicago late last month. Immigration officials are calling it the largest dragnet targeting foreign-born gang members in Illinois history. But others say some of the detainees didn’t deserve to be targeted and don’t deserve what’s likely in store for them now: deportation.
