Ana came to Chicago from Pakistan for an arranged marriage. The marriage quickly became abusive, and Ana moved into a women’s shelter where she lived until December 2005, when she was arrested and placed in immigration detention. Ana, who is diabetic, received neither proper medical treatment nor a regular healthy diet while in custody. She was frequently sick and neglected by facility staff. Ana was finally granted asylum in August 2006, but the inhumane treatment she faced while detained is an all too common experience for individuals held in the U.S. immigration detention system.
