Heartland Alliance's National Immigrant Justice Center's experienced legal staff can speak about the legal ramifications of immigration laws, provide analysis of how immigration policies play out in immigrant communities, and help put reporters in touch with immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers who can provide a human face to stories about the U.S. immigration system.

Andra Tai, U.S. citizen from Ghana

Tai was born in Ghana and came to the United States in 2000 to marry her fiancé, a U.S. citizen.

Tragedy struck the family when Andra's husband was diagnosed with cancer and died within two years of the wedding. As a result, the U.S. government stripped Andra of her lawful resident status and told her she would have to return to Ghana.

Andra faced further heartbreak when she gave birth to a son who suffered from liver disease and required a risky transplant, which could only be performed in the United States. Andra came to the National Immigrant Justice Center because she needed to remain in the United States to care for her son.

NIJC represented Andra and helped her receive a waiver that allowed her to obtain lawful permanent residence. Andra later applied for naturalization and in April 2007, she became a U.S. citizen. During her oath ceremony, she volunteered to lead a courtroom full of other new citizens in the Pledge of Allegiance.
