Historically, women seeking asylum in the United States because they suffered domestic abuse in their native countries have had a difficult time winning their cases. Now, there is a push to help domestic violence victims seeking asylum. Last year, NIJC submitted a friend of the court brief urging the Board of Immigration Appeals to consider gender as a "particular social" group qualified to receive asylum.
