NIJC filed a lawsuit against against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio challenging Maricopa County’s policy of honoring immigration detainers--meaning the local police holds individuals until immigration authorities can pick them up--without a warrant. The new Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone later announced they will no longer honor detainers, citing a “threat of litigation.”
