LGBT Immigrant Rights Initiative

The National Immigrant Justice Center's LGBT Immigrant Rights Initiative works to secure protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and HIV-positive immigrants and those who are victims of persecution in their home countries because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

NIJC's services for LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants include:

  • Experienced immigration legal staff represent individual clients and provide trainings, technical assistance and support materials for attorneys and social service providers who serve LGBT and HIV-positive asylum seekers. To schedule a consultation regarding an asylum case, call NIJC on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at (312) 660-1370.
  • NIJC responds to inquiries from jails throughout the country where immigrants are detained and seeking legal assistance.
  • The LGBT Immigrant Rights Initiative's Asylum Documentation Project collects and disseminates evidence to support cases of refugees seeking protection from human rights violations based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status.
