Reports are swirling in the news media that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said immigration reform will be a priority for U.S. Congress in 2009 ... and that achieving a reasonable bill may not be as difficult as many fear.

The same week that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Assistant Secretary Julie Myers announced she will resign November 15, the Boston Globe reported that ICE deportations increased 21 percent in fiscal year 2008.

Bush administration's planned improvements for immigration courts slow in coming Print E-mail

The latest TRAC study shows that the Department of Justice and Executive Office for Immigration Review have failed to fulfill significant parts of a 22-point plan issued in 2006 by then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to improve the U.S. immigration court system.

Apparently DHS doesn't have faith in its self-deportation program either Print E-mail

Because the same week U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched the Scheduled Departure Program inviting immigrants to turn themselves in for deportation (only three have), U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers reportedly were detaining U.S. children at the airport to lure and arrest undocumented family members who came to pick them up.

Effective Immigration Reform Must Go Beyond Creating New Deportation Programs Print E-mail

"If our government is serious about fixing our country's broken immigration system, it must move beyond its single-minded focus on creating new deportation policies," said National Immigrant Justice Center Director Mary Meg McCarthy. "By creating new programs like Operation Scheduled Departure, ICE does nothing more than separate families, harm communities, erode due process, and in the worst cases, subject men, women, and children to danger in their native countries."
