On Day 4 of Illinois Raids, ICE's Intentions Still Unclear Print E-mail
Thursday, 30 August 2007

The local newspaper for Waukegan, Illinois, reports today on immigration raids that have occurred throughout the Chicago suburbs since Sunday. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has not yet formally announced the reason for the arrests, despite the fact that more than 50 people are believed to have been detained this week as a result of the raids.

ICE officials have said in media interviews that the raids are targeting people who "pose a threat to public safety" and have a history of gang involvement. But as the Lake County News-Sun reports, at least some of those arrested left  behind any association with gangs long ago and are now working and raising families.

One detainee featured in the article has had no trouble with the law in more than six years.  Last year he became a foster parent for three nieces and nephews. "If he was in trouble, would (the Department of Children and Family Services) let him have foster kids?" his wife asks.

Word from NIJC's Waukegan office is that there is still a great deal of confusion in immigrant communities about the motivation for these arrests, four days after the first immigrants were detained.
