Update: Wisconsin student released from detention Print E-mail
Monday, 14 April 2008

Tope Awe, a University of Wisconsin student who was detained last month when Department of Homeland Security officials decided her father's medical visa had run out, is now free. But her case isn't over.

Immediately after Awe was detained, the Madison student community organized in her support, raising money to help her with legal fees and organizing a march to the Wisonsin State Capitol. As they marched through Madison's streets, however, they didn't just ask for Awe's release - they demanded better immigration laws.

DREAMActivist of A Dream Deferred, a website written by students throughout the country who support the DREAM Act and fair immigration reform, wrote about Awe's release:

The battle is not over because this is just a temporary resolution. However, this demonstrates that gathering petitions and protesting ICE detentions of students does make a difference when it comes to some immigration judges so to all those that are fighting deportation, keep up the fight and let us know how to assist in your cause.
