NIJC Director to Testify Before Congress on Medical Care in Immigrant Detention Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 June 2008

The National Immigrant Justice Center has represented immigrants in federal immigration detention facilities for more than a decade. Often, ensuring that our detained clients have a fair day in court means also fighting to ensure they have access to basic health care.

NIJC Director Mary Meg McCarthy will share her observations and recommendations with members of the U.S. House of Representatives today when she testifies before the House Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security & International Law Hearing on Problems with Immigration Detainee Medical Care. Read her full testimony here.

The hearing will be webcast at 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST) at http://judiciary.house.gov/.

Medical care in immigrant detention is finally receiving attention from members of Congress following a series of articles in The New York Times and The Washington Post last month detailing the extent of the government's failure to provide adequate medical and mental health care to immigrant men and women detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
