Detainee Access to Religious Ministry Bill Passes Unanimously in Illinois

A bill that allows religious workers to visit immigrants detained in Illinois jails passed unanimously last week in Illinois' House and Senate.

The Access to Religious Ministry Act (HB 4613) was the focus of intense advocacy efforts by a wide range of faith-based and immigrant rights organizations in Illinois.

According to the Chicago-based Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, "Under provisions of the new law, a facility cannot limit an immigrant’s time with a religious figure, and officials must provide advance notice of religious workers’ availability. The visits also cannot count against other visitations."
